Vinterfest - forbidden music

Alreday in February the Swedish festival season is awake; in a frozen Swedish landscape "... a festival that rocks" (The Times). Vinterfest in Mora, Orsa and Älvdalen is one of Sweden's high-profile festivals. Just a few Swedish festivals are better known abroad than the exotic chamber music festival started 2006 by Music in Dalarna with Martin Fröst as the artistic director. After 10 years, the Icelandic pianist Vikingur Ólafsson took over as artistic director. Winterfest 2017 is his second year.
Music as a medium for political messages, a subtle expression of dangerous ideas. Censorship, repression and propaganda - during the international chamber music festival Vinterfest we explore the artist's paradoxical role in a totalitarian regime. We bury ourselves in forbidden love, secret desires, unfulfilled dreams, marginalized composers and music forms and listening to banned musical intervals.
Vinterfest artistic director Víkingur Ólafsson has 2017 created a program that mixes music, politics and power, from contemporary music to the famous works by Mendelssohn, Mozart and Shostakovich.
